Meet  Marlin Kingi

I am thrilled to be a part of the upcoming 6-week summer prep course working with the Oceti Sakowan Tribal youth. As an Oglala Lakota and Maori individual, my roots trace back to the Pine Ridge reservation, where I was raised. My Ina is Elizabeth Mousseau Kingi, and my Ate is Marei Kingi. In the 1990s, I had the privilege of attending an educational camp with a similar focus at the School of Mines (SKILL and GEAR UP). I am confident that this summer program will positively impact many lives, I believe it will equip youth for successful careers while fostering friendships and creating lasting memories.

Presently, I serve as a Social Studies teacher at Lakota Tech High School in Pine Ridge, with five years of teaching experience. Prior to my career in education, I spent approximately six years working in social services with two different Southern California tribes. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in History Education from Utah Valley University in 2013 and completed my Master's Degree in Education at Claremont Graduate University in 2019.

For the past 14 years, I have shared my life journey with my wife, Tara Kingi. Together, we are blessed with four daughters aged between 12 and 3 years: Cante, Mareiana, Cumorah, and Talia. Since 2020, we have called Rapid City our home, embracing the beauty of the Black Hills and the warmth of our community.

Outside of my professional life, I find joy in reading, burgers and fries, exploring new places, running, exercising, engaging in board games, listening to reggae music, following football games, and actively participating in community service and volunteer work. Above all, my passion lies in spending quality time with my family and friends.
